Since the beginning of 2023, OpenAI ChatGPT has generated one million users, and counting in about a week. (1)

There is a feeding frenzy, or investing frenzy, that is stirring everyone up: today’s headline (Jan. 10, 2023) says that a $10 billion investment will be doled out incrementally over multiple years by Microsoft, in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Microsoft has already invested about $1 billion in the past.

Today’s Bloomberg article says: “It’s also working to add ChatGPT to its Bing search engine, seeking an edge on Alphabet Inc.’s dominant search offering. The bot is capable of responding to queries in a natural and humanlike manner, carrying on a conversation and answering follow-up questions, unlike the basic set of links that a Google search provides.” (2)

In the visual realm, AI is also flexing its “creative” muscles in transforming written descriptions for images into actual images of “art”, on programs such as DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. “AI-generated artwork won a recent art competition in the US, sparking controversy and fury among artists”. (3)

Reactions and overreactions to the perceived threat to human creativity by AI.

There have been various reactions of exuberance, fear, anxiety, “sky is falling”, “the ground is shifting”, etc., on the part of tech enthusiasts, digital marketing firms, bloggers, content creators, and artists.

Someone even said that “marketing careers are 5 years away from being replaced by AI”. (4)

Really?

Not so fast.

“ChatGPT is incredibly limited”, its “greatness” is a misleading impression.

The same article about Microsoft’s $10 billion investment also said that the New York City schools have banned its students from accessing ChatGPT, and quoted this tweet from Sam Altman, one of the cofounders (with others such as Elon Musk) of OpenAI:

“ChatGPT is incredibly limited, but good enough at some things to create a misleading impression of greatness.

it’s a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now. it’s a preview of progress; we have lots of work to do on robustness and truthfulness.” This tweet is dated Dec 10, 2022.

AI is FAR from writing with a high level of nuance, complexity, intellectuality, originality, and creativity.

I am an early adopter of AI enabled digital marketing. Four years ago I started to use an AI – human intelligence hybrid software for content marketing on social media for myself and for my agency’s clients – way ahead of 99.9% of marketing agencies – thanks to my proximity to Silicon Valley AND an open mind to embrace cutting edge technology. I have earned some insights, not just opinions, about what AI can and cannot realistically deliver.

I have also tried recently (as of Jan. 8, 2023) to use both ChatGPT to generate a blog, and DALL-E to create an image from a verbal description, after hearing from some friends who used OpenAI for coding and liked the results.

Since I am not a coding professional, this blog will focus on AI’s roles in content writing and art creation, where I’m experienced.

This article is not addressing the issue of copyright violation from AI’s use of other people’s writing and art without permission, compensation, or footnotes to cite their sources.

After 5 rounds of instructing AI about a topic, it could not deliver what I asked.

I instructed AI to write a blog, each time AI could not come up with I wanted. I kept revising my instruction to make it easier for AI to know my intention. If you want to see the five rounds of instructions, and what AI could come up with, the best it could do, see Footnote (5), below.

High quality ORIGINAL content cannot be recycled from mediocre content online: “Garbage in, garbage out”.

You may say that there is simply no great writing out there online, pertinent to my subject, for AI to “plagiarize” or “recycle” from.

You are right. What makes humanity advance forward and upward, is more than repeating what is already produced in the past, but by standing on the shoulders of the past creations, humans create new and original thoughts, ideas, technology, and art, with originality and ingenuity.

AI, at best, may provide us with the shoulders to stand on (provided that AI’s raw materials are  high quality data and information), but it cannot, and should not, replace the originality of human creativity and intellect.

AI can NEVER replace human originality. The joy of human creativity is both THE means and THE end.

High school and college students now have a choice between using generative AI technology to write their essays, or taking the more challenging route of writing their own papers. When cheating is at one’s fingertips, what students will lose is the real analytical and writing skills that can only be obtained through writing, on their own, again, and again. A mind is like a knife, gets sharpened on the sharpening stone of writing. There is no shortcut.  In addition to intellectual dishonesty, those who use AI to cheat themselves out of their own training will not develop real skills for critical thinking, processing and analyzing complex issues, and distilling vast amounts of information to its gist – all of which can only derive from personally writing your own papers, in challenging and honest academic pursuits.

If someone uses AI to write a love poem for his/her lover, and lets AI hijack the uniquely personal process of expressing one’s own feelings, perceptions, sentiments, memories, to another unique person –  it is like replacing one’s own vocal cords with artificial ones.  Even though the artificial vocal cords can sing like an opera singer, they are NOT yours. And your lover most likely values your own imperfect yet uniquely personal voice of yours, more than that of an artificial tone and voice, however “better” it sounds, if s/he truly loves YOU.

Imagine how you feel when your innocent 4-year old child draws a picture for you with his/her own hand, and gives that picture to you on your birthday – the art only a child can draw, with crude lines, smeared colors, human figures all in circles, and a hand with 4 fingers… But if your child gives you a perfectly Rembrandt like image of something generated by AI, and says “Happy Birthday, I made it with AI,” – which would you rather have?

Good news:  Chat GPT and DALL.E2 are increasing the value of original art.

As generative AI is getting prevalent, cheap, and almost free to use, the vast quantity of low quality writing and imaging will only jack up the prices of truly high quality writing and original art by masters’ own hands.

Good news for bloggers, writers, artists: create very personal stories with unique voices and styles, this is the age that will refine the truly great from the vast mediocrity.  This is the golden age for individuality, originality, and authenticity. This is my firm belief and exact prediction.

The bottom line is:  Technology is to serve humanity, not the other way around.

Silicon Valley is notorious for hyping up a frenzy, for red-eyed investors to pour their billions into  Elizabeth Holmes’ mirage, and Sam Bankman-Fried’s ponzi scheme. I am NOT saying AI investment will lead to the same fate, on the contrary, I do believe that AI, as a tool, has so much potential and room for improvement and investment.

My point is, technology’s limitation is as far as HUMANITY’s imagination, drive, and originality. It will be a truly sad day for humanity if and when humanity’s original creative power, bestowed by the Almighty, is sacrificed at the altar of mimicking technology. This is a philosophical point.

Practically, from the ROI point of view, my advice to the millionaires, billionaires, and wannabes: invest in both OpenAI, AND original masterpieces of art, and I dare to bet you that in the long long term, AI won’t be worth nearly as much as original art.

And for those bloggers, writers, novelists, poets:  have fun in both the process of writing and creating, and enjoy the fruits of your creativity.  Your skills will never be replaced, if they are truly original. Your fruits will always be sweeter than artificial ones, and more desirable, and valued at higher prices.

Be creative! For that is the true joy of living!

(5): My 5-rounds of revised instructions to AI, for a blog, and what AI wrote on my subject:

(Round 1:)  write about “coaching leadership style” AFTER explaining first what “leadership styles” are about.

Use “coaching leadership style” 5 times in the article, once in the title.  differentiated from “coaching leadership style”.

(Round 2:) write about “coaching leadership style” AFTER explaining first what “leadership styles” are about.

Use “coaching leadership style” 5 times in the article, once in the title.  Differentiate from “management styles”.

(Round 3:) write about “coaching leadership style” AFTER explaining first different “leadership styles”. Then write about the importance of “coaching leadership style” for leaders, by an executive coach, or a leadership coach, or a business coach, so leaders can use different leadership styles in different situations.

Use “coaching leadership style” 5 times in the article, once in the title.

(Round 4:) write about how executive coaches provide coaching leadership style AFTER explaining first different leadership styles. Why leaders can use different leadership styles in different situations.

Use coaching leadership style 5 times in the article, once in the title.

(Round 5:) write about how executive coaches, or leadership coaches, or business coaches provide “coaching leadership style” service AFTER explaining first different leadership styles. Then write about why leaders can use different leadership styles in different situations after receiving instructions for “coaching leadership style” from executive coaches.

Use “coaching leadership style” 5 times in the article, once in the title.

After tweaking and refining my instructions five times, the best ChatGPT could come up with still cannot deliver what my team writers and myself can write, in terms of structuring interwoven intellectual concepts, and organizing ideas and facts into layers to support the central theme: “how executive coaches provide “coaching leadership style” service, and why leaders can use different leadership styles in different situations after receiving instructions for “coaching leadership style” from executive coaches.”

This is the best AI could do (not entirely on point):

“Coaching Leadership Style: How Executive Coaches Help Leaders Succeed

Leadership styles refer to the behaviors and approaches that leaders use to guide and motivate their team. There are many different leadership styles, including autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire, each with its own strengths and limitations.

The coaching leadership style is a more personalized approach to leadership that involves working closely with team members to help them develop their skills and achieve their goals. Executive coaches, also known as leadership coaches or business coaches, specialize in providing this type of support to leaders.

Executive coaches work with leaders to identify areas for growth and development and provide guidance and support as they work to improve their leadership skills. They may use a variety of techniques, such as one-on-one coaching, group training sessions, and assessments, to help leaders develop their leadership style and become more effective in their roles.

One of the benefits of the coaching leadership style is that it allows leaders to use different leadership styles depending on the needs of their team and the situation at hand. For example, a leader may use an autocratic approach to make a quick decision in a crisis situation, while using a more democratic approach to build consensus on a long-term project.

By working with an executive coach and learning the coaching leadership style, leaders can gain the skills and confidence they need to adapt their leadership style to fit the needs of their team and the organization. This can help them achieve better outcomes and build more cohesive, effective teams.”
