In the fast changing world of AI, how to reinvent yourself and your companies? – Insights for leaders regarding attitude, mindset, strategies, goals, and action.

We are living in a fast-changing world. AI is disrupting almost all traditional industries and services. How we interact with information, our community, and each other; how we work and consume are all changing.

(A) Lead yourself and reinvent yourself, before you can lead organizational changes

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” — Jalaluddin Mevlana Rumi

If there is such a thing as an unchanging truth, it is that our universe is endlessly expanding. Our world is ceaselessly changing.

Life is a marathon of never-ending changes, that’s the only unchanging truth. Your revenue goes downhill if your company stops growing. You stop growing if you refuse to learn and improve. This has nothing to do with “keeping up with the Joneses”, or being trapped in a hamster wheel.

When was the last time you reinvented yourself?

Let’s face it: change is uncomfortable, even threatening.  It seems only yesterday that you achieved certain stability in your life, career, or your company. It seemed to have taken all you’d got to get there, and you thought you could now enjoy a long vacation, to recharge and get some well-deserved rest – only to be rudely awoken: Get up, put on your running shoes, and race again.

The first thing you CAN change is your own attitude

Would you rather go through changes like a brave and curious adventurer, or be dragged, kicking and screaming? Which attitude is more enjoyable and fruitful? A positive mindset yields a positive outcome. (The book “Mindset” by Carol Dweck will help you.)

Instead of reacting to changes that are happening to you, let changes take place for you: Grab the bull by its horn, actively and pro-actively embrace changes, enjoy the challenges, and be grateful for the unfamiliar, the new, the unknown that will catapult you and your organization to a new height.

Rephrasing the negative into positive is a mental habit one can acquire and adopt with practice. All positive changes start with changing your attitude first. Then you can change your mindset:  First develop a mindset of mental toughness and positivity, then you can start the process of changing your life and your organization for the better.

Periodically break out of your comfort zone, and learn to love the “thrill” of discomfort

What I mean by the word “reinvent” is to evolve, to grow. (Not “to remake or redo completely”, but “to bring into use again”, based on the dictionary definitions.)

“To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.” – Aristotle.

If you don’t want a life of nothingness, to learn new things, to change, to reinvent yourself and your organization is never a smooth journey, but full of ups and downs. To enjoy being in discomfort is an acquired taste that needs rewards and celebrations for every achievement, big or small. Resilience is needed to pick yourself up from painful failures and setbacks. It is entirely dependent on your inner strength, beliefs, values, convictions, and mental habits.

What are your foundational pillars that will support you through thick and thin?

To reclaim the innermost core of yourself needs mental solitude, perspectives, and coaching. The strength to reinvent yourself comes from clarity about your vision and purpose, and strategy for sustained execution.

It takes humility to know that you need someone else to see your blindspots, you need coaching to get perspectives and to hone the new vision for your life and purposes.

I have had the honor and privilege of coaching, reinventing, and rebranding individual leaders in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, even in their 70’s, who are starting a new business.  The more you try to reinvent yourself, the fuller and richer you become.

To achieve reinvention, you need growth strategies before taking action. I help with that as well.

If you are ready, willing, and even eager to step outside your comfort zone, for your next level of growth, what else is needed to help you get there? – The specifics. The daily habits.

Goals – Actions;  Goals – Actions; Repeat again and again.

Set goals and take action. The journey to reinvent and rebrand yourself starts with your first step, and the next step… Eventually you become a better, stronger, and happier self after the 10,000th step.

  • Don’t wait for opportunities to happen to you.
  • Opportunities favor the prepared.
  • Create the conditions for opportunities.
  • Create opportunities.

If the next career promotion requires higher education – get one!

If a compatible relationship requires you to relocate – move!

If writing a book is on your bucket – write! (That’s me, BTW.)

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

“It’s never too late to be who you might have been.” — George Eliot

(B) Change is incremental. Start small to change yourself before changing the world

“True life is lived when tiny changes occur.” — Leo Tolstoy

Don’t plan on projects that are too big, such as writing a book (me, but I am ready now for my book, after hundreds of blogs); or quit an addiction cold turkey, but set up small goals: write blogs every other week (me), vape every other day for a week, then every 3 days, once a week…Then you can INCREMENTALLY, SLOWLY, but SURELY make small changes, which will slowly reach a big goal. The key is to (1) set a small goal, and (2) stick to it, even if you fail, don’t give up after setbacks, keep trying to reach your small goals, and celebrate!

Even if the universe really started with a Big Bang, its expansion is slow, steady, incremental, and constant. Take slow, steady, incremental, and constant actions. Put one foot ahead of the other, again, and again, repeat, and repeat.  Enjoy the journey. Stop to smell the flowers, rest and recharge, but keep going, keep changing, keep reinventing. When (not if) you get there, you will realize that the person inside you at the end of the journey is no longer the same “you” that embarked on the journey.  The journey transformed you, reinvented you, and that’s the whole purpose.

(C) An individual CAN change the world, with many other individuals

Think of that lone man, standing in front of a column of tanks in Tiananmen Square.

Remember Alexei Navalny, one individual, inspiring so many.

They believed in the truth they each cherished. They inspired and made a difference in the world.

Be the change you want to see in the world. “The future has many names. For the weak, it’s unattainable. For the fearful, it’s unknown. And for the bold, it’s ideal.” – Victor Hugo.

Leaders: whether it is yourself and/or your organizations,  “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” — Socrates
