Last year when our former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, and met pro-democracy activists there, it caused a fury on the part of the Chinese government in the PRC. I made a short video “Nancy Pelosi has got balls”, giving a shoutout to her standing up to China’s threats and bullying. My team posted it on TikTok and other social media.
Lo and behold, then my Tiktok account was completely deleted, gone, wiped out. More than an inability to sign in, it disappeared from the world.
My team and I had to open a brand new TikTok account afterwards.
There was no explanation, no warning, no nothing. We emailed TikTok customer support, and never received any reply. We have to reload our videos and start all over again, losing all our previous followers with 10 Plus Brand’s new TikTok account. If they could do this, they could do a whole lot more, behind our backs, without our knowledge. This is much worse than spotting a Chinese balloon in our sky. What you cannot see in the cyber world is way more dangerous.
Now TikTok is under scrutiny from US lawmakers, and it is playing offense by actively influencing the American government and the American general public’s opinions (given its popularity among young people).
US senators and congressmen and women: do NOT let TikTok win, with offense, defense, charm offense, bullying, or whatever. Protect OUR democracy and freedom of speech, freedom of press, even our data privacy and national security. This is NOT a partisan issue. A shoutout to Josh Hawley for introducing the bill to completely ban TikTok – you’ve got balls too!
