Three of the founding fathers of America died on July 4th, America’s birthday: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe.
If it was just one, or maybe two of them, it would be easier to assume it was a mere coincidence. But three of the founders all died of natural causes on July 4th (Jefferson and Adams died on the same day), I have no other way to understand it except that it was by the will of God, as a message to us.
Just like the creation of the United States was not by any stroke of luck but with inspiration, determination, and bloody execution to turn a historical destiny into reality, the Mighty hand who guided our forefathers through all the trials and tribulations was and is reminding us all, through eternity, with the date of their deaths that only God could control.
On the occasion of the 250th birthday of the United States, I hear the voice of Benjamin Franklin, another instrumental founder of America, echoing over and over again: After the Revolutionary War, all former colonies gathered in Philadelphia to determine what kind of country the newly created America will be – monarchy, democracy, or another form of government. When the conference was over and the people waiting outside asked Benjamin Franklin eagerly: “What kind of country? What kind of government?” Ben Franklin said: “A republic, IF YOU CAN KEEP IT.”
Have we kept it?
Will we keep it?
Have we let the dark side get hold of us, or our better angels?
Are we inspiring the world as a force for good?
Have we lived up to the values, ideals, and beliefs that America stands for?
Can we continue to shine as the beacon on the hill?
44 years ago, I came to America on my own, leaving everything behind in China, because I believed in America, in liberty, democracy, the rule of law, and its ideals and aspirations. I wrote an introduction to my memoir “50 Dollars and a Tiger Balm” for this transformational journey. Today, as a naturalized citizen for 30 years,I still and will always believe in America. Her destiny is in all of our hands.
“A republic, IF YOU CAN KEEP IT.”
May our beloved America remain in the grace of God, to lead humanity into a better future.
Happy birthday and God bless America!
