When a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, or Perplexity who does something best, the brand named in the answer gets a visitor who already has a recommendation in hand. Those AI-referred customers are fast becoming the most valuable visitors a brand can win. In this episode, Joanne Z. Tan, Founder & CEO of 10 Plus Brand, Inc. and creator of AIXD.world, explains how AI referrals work, why AI-referred visitors arrive ready to act, and the three steps brands can take to earn more of them.
AI-referred traffic is growing fast, and it converts. Adobe found that in March 2026, traffic from AI sources to U.S. retail sites converted 42% better than non-AI traffic, and those visitors spent 48% longer on site. By the time an AI-referred visitor clicks through, the AI has already explained what you do, compared you with competitors, and recommended you. The sale is half made before they arrive.
An AI mention puts your brand’s name in the answer. An AI citation links to your content as a source. An AI referral is where both pay off, when the AI recommends you and moves a prospect your way. The two don’t always travel together. Semrush’s October 2026 AI Visibility Index found that fewer than half of the brands AI mentions most were also among the websites it cites most, in both the UK and the US. AI can recommend a brand without ever linking to it, so what others say about you carries real weight.
A brand’s own website is only a fraction of what AI reads before it makes a recommendation. Reviews, comparisons, how-to content, creator coverage, and community discussions all shape which brands get named, and AI absorbs new material quickly. A VaynerX and Profound report found the median time from publication to first AI citation was just 6.8 days.
Each platform also reads the web differently, relying on different search indexes and trusting different sources, from YouTube to Reddit to LinkedIn. A brand can draw steady AI-referred traffic from one platform and none from another. Joanne explains why a single-platform strategy is no longer enough.
Keep your websites, social profiles, business listings, and product pages complete and current. When information is missing or outdated, AI fills in the gaps, and AI-referred visitors arrive with the wrong expectations, which costs brand trust.
Original research, firsthand experience, and distinctive points of view keep their value even after AI summarizes them. Tools, calculators, and templates resist summarization altogether, giving AI a reason to send users to your site.
Ask AI platforms about your category, note which third-party sites they cite, and build relationships with the creators, publications, and communities that shape those answers but haven’t yet discussed your brand.
Joanne Z. Tan points out that a company’s size and SEO budget no longer guarantee visibility. The brands that combine thought leadership content with credible third-party content will be the ones AI recommends, and the ones AI-referred customers find first.
